Many Activities Going On NOW!
It is a very busy time of year and easy to lose track of all that is going on. Here is a reminder of activities going on now!
We will again be producing a GIPA Book for the 2013/14 school year. Pre-orders are available until April 30, 2014, and there will be a limited amount of advertising and dedication space, which will cover the production cost of the book. Proceeds from the book sales will go directly towards GIPA and will benefit the students of the German Language Program.
Please pre-order your GIPA Book for a discounted price until April 30. Simply fill out the GIPA Book pre-order form and return together with your payment. The deadline for advertisements and dedications (March 31) has passed. Learn more about the book and see sample pages from previous years on the GIPA Book page.
GIPA Gala was a big success!
Dear GIPA Supporters,
Do you recognize these dancing legs? They were letting lose at last Saturday's annual GIPA Gala that showed lots of "green" and was full of fun, organic food and friendship. Gisele Widmer has shared her pictures from the event in an online album. (Be patient if they are slow to load, there are many photos!)
Many thanks for those joining us that night and to those who contributed to the silent auction and raffle prizes! Among the donations were HEAT Play-off tickets, hotel weekend stays at the Ritz Carlton on South Beach, the Palms Hotel and the Intercontinental Hotel. In-home wine tastings by Wines for Humanity, Porsche items, handcrafted jewelry by Mahi Art, kid's camps, the many beautifully decorated class baskets and much more. We are very thankfull to all sponsors and donors, because all proceeds from the Gala are going 100% to your children's German classrooms and education.
A special thank you to our teachers, principals and members from the German consulate for joining us. My special gratitude goes out to the many parents, high school volunteers and board members for their talent and time contributed to make this evening a success.
We look forward to seeing you again next year at our annual Gala and hope to see you then again!
Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Competition 2014; YOU CAN CAST ONE VOTE DAILY
The Carver PTSA has some exciting news. We felt it was worth sharing with the GIPA community, especially since three of the students invloved with the project are in the German program. The following is a reprint of a letter they sent out on Feb 26:
Our school, G.W. Carver Middle School in Coconut Grove Florida, is one of 15 national finalists for the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Competition 2014. The contest, which began with over 2,300 entries, continues with a student presentation on March 3rd in Austin, Texas and culminates with online voting by the community, friends, family and alumni at: http://www.samsung.com/us/solvefortomorrow/projects/old-smokeys-dirty-secret.html.
Here's how you can help:
1. Watch our students' video "Old Smokey's Dirty Secret." The project has direct implications for our school, community, and as you will see, it has a special place in our hearts.
2. Vote DAILY by clicking on the link above. There is one vote per email address per day. Voting begins today and lasts through March 14th.
3. Share this information with everyone you know. Feel free to post this on your Facebook page, Twitter, via email, or even by sending smoke signals! (No pun intended.) For social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram please make sure you also include two very important hashtags in each post: #SamsungSolve, as well as #TeamGWCMS. Schools who have the highest combined total of #SamsungSolve and #TeamGWCMS hashtags will receive a very special and unique reward.
Carver could win over $140,000 in much-needed technology and Carver students get the opportunity to share their love of science and their community at the same time. Talk about using their power for good!

Class of 2013 IB students receive their IB diplomas
Below is a photo from the Dec 18, 2013 ceremony for the Class of 2013 IB students receiving their IB diplomas. Many students are already home from university for the holidays and the event had a great turnout. In attendance was Ms. Ulrike Pelissier, Deputy Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Some points of pride: 85% of all IB students at Coral Reef High School passed the IB tests and requirements and received their IB diploma. Coral Reef High School had the highest passing rate in Miami Dade County IB schools. There are many IB schools but only 2 that offer IB German. 100% of all German Program IB students (IS and IE) passed the German IB test. The Coral Reef IB students who graduated this year received their diplomas at a brunch, which was hosted by the IBIS foundation. Also awarded were the German Sprachdiplom Awards to those students who passed their Sprachdiplom test in their senior year. Many students already passed their Sprachdiplom test in 11th grade. Congratulations to the class of 2013!!
Carver students prepare for high school with trip to Coral Reef
Nearly fifty 8th grade students in the German program at Carver took a field trip today (Monday, Dec 16th, 2013) to Coral Reef Senior High School to see first hand what our magnet school program has to offer. The students were treated to a 2 hour tour of the campus and had the chance to meet and mingle with Coral Reef students.
Reminder to parents - magnet school applications for all schools are due January 15th and you must have a teacher recommendation to apply for Coral Reef. Find more information and more pictures by clicking the picture below:

2013 Oktoberfest - A great event!
GIPA would like to thank all of our volunteers, parents, students, teachers, school administrators, sponsors and German Government officials, for joining us during Saturday’s 22nd GIPA Oktoberfest. We would also like to thank the German American Social Club for once again hosting our event at their beautiful grounds.
The weather was picture perfect for a day of fun and games for the kids while adults had plenty of opportunities to mingle with friends and fellow parents. Food and drinks were delicious, the silent auction and raffle had exciting items to display and the students’ performances showcased by students from all our four schools offered entertainment to all proud parents and family members watching. Needless to say, we could not have done it without all of you.
A big heart-felt thank you for your continued support, from all of us at the GIPA Board!
