Congratulations to all our recipients and thanks so much to all who attended, particularly the Consul General, Juergen Borsch, our German Language Advisor, Petra Reuter, our new teacher - Mr Steffen Rapp, and the new IB Coordinator at Reef - Kelli Wise.
Thanks as always to Daniela Kuczurba for her outstanding leadership and organization at Reef to make the ceremony aesthetically appealing and appetizing as always - and to Jacqueline Duester for lending a hand of support as always!
Teacher Appreciation Dinner
GIPA held a dinner, Monday September 8, to celebrate the start of anew school year and to thank the German language teachers, the board, the consulate and the german language advisor for their hard work and dedication. The board would also like to thank our hosts, Sports Grill Miami, for a wonderful event.
Welcome to the 2014-2015 School Year
It seems like just yesterday we were celebrating the start of summer – and the annual rituals of fun, sun & travel that make it such a memorable part of the year. But alas, what feels like just moments after we sent a series of graduating classes off to new platforms of higher education at every level, we are ready to usher in another bright eyed group of first time students as part of the welcoming traditions of Fall.
Once again we have so much to look forward to as we begin yet another school year. Our program continues to grow and gain traction. As we continue to replenish our ranks with 3 more fully stocked first grade classes at Sunset & West Lab, we also welcome an impressive collection of freshmen to Coral Reef High School. Nearly 20 IS students, who began their German journey at Sunset almost a decade ago, will be joined by a host of additional incoming German IE and German first time elective students to comprise one of the largest 9th grade German classes in years for us at Reef. And solidly sandwiched in between them all are our middle school students who just happen to proudly attend the #1 ranked public middle school in all of Florida at G.W. Carver.
After enduring one of our more challenging years from a teacher turnover standpoint in quite some time, we are thrilled to announce that we have an incredibly talented and stable core of faculty at each of our 4 schools. We are truly primed for a great year of learning and achievement in our program. While our footing is solid, our mission remains a march of intense and incredible effort. With budget cutbacks affecting education at every level of state and local government and with a reduced level of funding from our most substantial supporters at the German consulate, our challenge to remain a successful and sustainable program is ever present.
Fundraising – from membership drives to our series of enjoyable events – will continue to form a most critical part of the mission. Our goals – by necessity – are not small and we must increase our participation rates at every level... at every member school. While each of our nearly 400 students receives the benefits of instruction, less than 50% of our families contribute to the cause as members. We cannot continue to count on the tremendous generosity of some to carry the weight for all who benefit from the merits of this incredible program.
Participation does not end with a donation of funds. While several fresh faces now fill several slots on our volunteer-based board, these incredibly dedicated individuals cannot do it alone. There is a significant & immediate need for additional assistance. Be it as a volunteer for our various fundraising events or as a parent willing to assist in some much needed areas of professional expertise on our board of directors, you can and must make a difference.
Our calendar, as always, begins with a busy fall. Please join us for our Fall General meeting at 6:30 pm next Thursday, September 11th at Sunset Elementary. This is a great opportunity to learn more about our program, our mission, our finances and our future. One month later, on Saturday October 11th, we will host our 23rd annual Oktoberfest at the German American Social Club. Our signature cultural celebration promises to once again put the “fun” in fundraising and is always a memorable family event.
2014-15 marks the 29th year that GIPA has supported the German language programs in Miami. We welcome members – both returning and new – to a fabulous laboratory of learning, and encourage each of you to get actively involved in the program.
See you in September !!

WELCOME The new 1st Graders at Sunset and West Lab!
About 60 new students have entered our German program at both schools combined for the 2014/15 school year.
Each year, GIPA and the second-grade families host a welcome picnic for the incoming first grade families. This year, the picnic was at the Dante Fascell Park on Aug 16. Some pictures posted here, and more available on Dropbox. Thanks to the second-grade families and welcome to the first-grade families!!!
