G.W Carver Middle School

Summer Studies - German

Grade:7 IS 2026/2027

Dear parents and students!

We are all looking forward to our well-deserved summer vacation and in order to be prepared for the DSD testing next year, students should study German over the summer as follows:

  1. Students were given the possibility to take a book from the library and within the first 2 weeks of school I will collect their handwritten book report.

  1. As the DSD reading exam gets harder every year, I would like students to work on their vocabulary. Attached you will find 2 list of words and expressions, that will help them master the reading and listening comprehension parts.

  1. Furthermore, I would like your children to watch the German news daily on Logo TV (https://www.logo.de/). In addition, many movies you allow your children to watch could be played in German as well. This will help them for their listening comprehension part.

  1. Their ‘Fragenkatalog’-answers are mostly done and will stay in the school, but I will attach a copy and if you can ask your children a question from time to time and have them answer it, this would certainly also be helpful.

Thank you very much for your support and enjoy your summer vacation!

Kind regards,

Dr. Corinna Boelsterli

Dear parents and students!

We are all looking forward to our well-deserved summer vacation and in order to be prepared for the AP testing next year, students should study German over the summer as follows:

  1. Students are given the possibility to take a book from the library and finish reading the book ‘Als Hitler das rosa Kaninchen stahl’ (can be ordered in Amazon). Within the first 2 weeks of school I will collect their handwritten book report.

  1. As the AP reading exam gets harder every year, I would like students to work on their vocabulary. Mastering German Vocabulary (A Thematic Approach, Barron’s Vocabulary) s a good resource because it organizes vocabulary into themes. Studies have shown that we learn vocabulary better if we can organize words into groups.

  1. Furthermore, I would like your children to watch the German news daily on Logo TV (https://www.logo.de/ or ‘Deutsche Welle’ https://www.dw.com/de/themen/s-9077).

  1. In addition, many movies you allow your children to watch could be played in German as well. This will help them for their listening comprehension part.

  1. Finally, even though the AP exam is going to change for next year, this book can be helpful practicing the reading and listening comprehension part: Deutsch Prüfungstraining, AP German Language and Culture, Cornelson (ISBN 978-3060208722).

Thank you very much for your support and enjoy your summer vacation!

Kind regards,

Dr. Corinna Boelsterli
